6 Steps to Creating Your Own Marketing Materials - Part One

The best voice to speak for you is your own.

At Alphagraphics STL, we strive to help our customers find their marketing voice. In our next two blogs, we will discuss six crucial steps to clearly communicating through print marketing. This week will focus on the written content in your marketing materials.
  • Keep it Simple
If you’re spending money on a batch of posters or flyers, it can be tempting to want to communicate as much as possible about your company. This “bang for your buck” mentality makes a ton of sense, and we’ve been there before. But we’ve learned it’s best to always have a specific focus for our marketing materials. We do this by first finding an angle: we ask ourselves “what are we trying to accomplish with this specific brochure?” and then we write to meet this specific goal. It’s important to avoid technical, industry-specific jargon. Instead picture that you are communicating to a neighbor in the grocery store about the product or service. Keeping it simple with your topic, purpose, and wording will help your customer understand and appreciate your product.
  • Focus on the Customer
We can’t stress this enough. It seems confusing because you are talking to the customer about your product. And yet, marketing research has shown that customers respond better to ads that are about them. In order to this, emphasize the benefit that your product or service would have on their life. Focus on their needs, their personal goals, and how the product may be the solution they’ve been looking for. Be sure to provide specific examples of situations where the customer would be happy to have your purchased your product or service. By focusing on your customer, you ensure that you told them what they need to know about your product.
  • Write Good Content
It seems like a no-brainer, but good writing can be tricky to achieve. Even if you follow the above steps, you can still write blandly or in a way that confuses your customer. In light of this, be sure to have a consistent voice and tone. Read the writing aloud to see if the writing makes sense. It should sound like it’s coming from the mouth of one person, in one specific conversation. Try to carry a persuasive tone in your writing, without sounding pushy or condescending. With this last step, it’s best to bring other people in to read your writing. The highest level professional and the lowest-level are equally valuable in this process!
